about

Heavy and atmospheric, riff-driven progressive rock with smart, poetic lyrics and wildly dynamic tonal shifts from huge, storming metal to pristine, alternative dreamscapes.

Singer/guitarist John Sperger and bassist Steve Giles formed The Magnetic South in 2015 over a shared love of long-form, heavy and atmospheric progressive rock music. Their debut album Sea Level is dark and powerful, exploring themes of descent, loss and eventually what it means to be human. Huge riffs are contrasted with ambient dreamscapes as the conceptual narrative journeys from lofty, pristine privilege down through the depths of despair and tragedy.
